Throwing Courses

Joss regularly teaches how to throw pots on the potters' wheel at Powdermills.
Stay at a local B&B or hostel in the middle of the wild Dartmoor landscape, spend your days learning pottery skills, spend your evenings next to the fire at a traditional local pub sampling homemade pies and ales!

You can choose from two different types of courses:-

2 day Weekend Intensive
5 day Summer School

2 day Weekend Intensive - £165

This two day course runs at weekends, once a month in the Autumn/Winter season when the shop and cafe is closed. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the key techniques of throwing; it is intended for both complete beginners and those who have thrown before and wish to improve their skills. There is a maximum of 4 places on each course, with each attendee having use of their own electric wheel for the duration of the weekend.

The essential skills of throwing cylinders, bellies, bowls, lips and adding handles will be covered. Those with more experience will be set more complex challenges. Joss gives regular demonstrations to the group as a whole, and provides one-to-one advice where needed.

On each day, teaching time will be between 10am and 4pm.
All materials included in the cost of the course.
Attendees are asked to bring their own packed lunch.

Please Note: none of the pots produced during the weekend are kept or fired. But you will gain a dramatic improvement in your throwing skills.

5 day Summer School - £410

The 5 day course both refines your key throwing skills and the skills needed to complete further stages of pot-making. The first half of the course covers all of the fundamental skills of throwing covered in the two day course. The second half of the course encourages you to design a pot, throw the compoments using your new skills and assemble the final pot,

There is a maximum of 4 places on each course, with each attendee having use of their own electric wheel for the duration of the weekend.
On each day, teaching time will be between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
